There are good schools in Chiang Mai ranging from kindergarten up to university. Our organization has deep connections, and experience working with the local international schools. Unlike other countries, you cannot put your child in a local Thai public school and have them learn by immersion. This leaves you with the options of international schools, homeschooling, worldschooling or Thai private school.
An expert in our group developed an in-depth questionnaire and has reached out to the international schools in the area to get detailed information on how trans children are supported. Some will fully support your child’s gender identity, pronouns, name, dress, and provide a supportive environment. There are also a handful of schools which won’t support your child in the ways that they deserve and we can help you avoid those altogether. A typical range for cost is $5,000 – $25,000 per year in US dollars (150k baht – 800k baht). Thai private schools are less expensive and a possibly might be an option but finding a good fit that would work for your child might be challenging. Unfortunately, we do not currently have specific knowledge of Thai private schools. One advantage of the private or international school route is that it qualifies your child for an education visa and one parent per child is granted as well.
Due to costs being prohibitive and international schools often not having adequate special education options, we are considering creating a co-op with local teachers if the need arises. If a co-op might be a good fit for your family, please reach out to us.
There are many homeschooling groups in the area and there is a worldschooling hub in the south of Thailand. We are working to gain more knowledge of these groups so that we can connect people to helpful home/worldschooling resources in the near future. Many of them can be found on facebook.
Please feel free to reach out via email or phone to schedule a call where we can help you find supportive schooling options for your child(ren).
