We are here to help!  With the growing hostility to trans people around the world, transACTIONrefuge is here to help you understand what a relocation to Thailand would look like – (Thailand, a tolerant, safe and welcoming country in South-East Asia).  Getting here is extremely easy (with the no visa needed tourist entry), you can hop a plane tomorrow and take care of the paperwork when you are here.

We are based in Chiang Mai, a city in northern Thailand with a vibrant expat community consisting with digital nomads, teachers, artists, working professionals and retirees.

This type of move isn’t easy. We are here to help trans people and their families navigate the pitfalls of moving to an unfamiliar country – providing help with visas, accommodation, healthcare, jobs, and daily living.  We partner with a few select trusted Thai LGBT-friendly businesses that can help!

My experience has been that Thailand is a much more welcoming and accepting space for trans people than the United States. Before I arrived in Thailand I was going through stress and anxiety about whether Thailand would be truly trans accepting. I have opened up to many people about my identity and why I have left and they have all been very accepting and understanding – particularly the local Thai people.

On paper the laws and protections in Thailand are not great, however, in my daily life here I have not experienced any harassment or violence. Whereas in the U.S. I had better protections but I experienced a lot of discrimination and did not feel safe.

“I see trans Thais all over the place. I was surprised when I first arrived in Thailand. I walked into a 7-11 and a trans woman, a woman in a burka, a man, and a woman were all working together, laughing and joking together. None of them cared about the differences between them. I see this all the time. It shouldn’t be surprising but it still is. Imagine if the world was like this”

We arrived in Thailand emotionally drained from the process of dismantling our life in the states. Only one of our family members had even been to Thailand before so it was a lot to take in. Fortunately we were connected to TransActionRefuge in the week after our arrival.

They helped us learn to navigate our new Thai life in so many ways. They took us grocery shopping and drove us to get a mattress. They invited us to dinner and community gatherings. Their support greatly sped up our settling in process and decreased our sense of isolation.
